Beginning My Journey In Special Ed

Welcome to my new (and first) blog!  Ever since I began teaching, I have taught 5th grade and loved it. The student population has been a mix of general ed students, ELLs, and students with IEPs. This past June I was told that I would be switching grades, but because I was moving to another testing grade, I wasn't too concerned about the change. Then came the life changing phone call. *dun dun dun*

My school called to tell me that I had been chosen to be a special education provider for grades k - 5! O_O (<--- eyes wide open) As the words came through the phone, I was dumbfounded. Of course I did the professional thing of saying 'thank you' and how i was 'so excited for the new experience'. I was on the subway, and probably looked as though I had been slapped across the face by a passing stranger that just kept walking. My mouth was literally gaping open and my eyes were as wide as can be.  The few details I received were: I will be splitting the caseload with one other teacher, but working in a large urban elementary school, that still gives me approximately 45 students. I will be in a tiny room (specific dimensions to follow once i am allowed into the school), and that I can find a 40-some-odd page job description online. Essentially, most would call this position a resource room teacher.

Once I processed this, which only took a few hours, I've decided that this is going to be the best "new start" I could ask for. I know the people that I work with, I know the ins and outs of the school, yet I am basically starting a new career. I am really excited about the position, but it is definitely going to be an adventure! I invite you to join me as I embark on this incredible journey.
